Le concours "Moscow Beauty-1988", selon le secrétaire du comité municipal de Moscou du Komsomol V. Pankin, n'était pas du tout commercial: "Il a une fonction importante et socialement transformatrice - sauver une femme de l'urbanisation, d'être perdue dans la foule, pour augmenter le prestige d'une femme dans la société."
La sélection a eu lieu dans l'administration du Parc Gorki de la Culture. La ligne était longue de plusieurs kilomètres, il n'y avait pas que des jeunes femmes, mais aussi des jeunes mères avec des enfants, avec des maris, avec quelques sacs à cordes. L'un des organisateurs du concours était Leonid Yakubovich. Lors de la sélection, il a demandé aux filles de relever leurs jupes. Les premiers concours de beauté, organisés en 1988 à Vilnius, Riga, Leningrad, Odessa, ne sont pas passés inaperçus et il était impossible d'obtenir des billets pour le spectacle. Trois gagnants du concours Riga-88, par exemple, ont chacun reçu un manteau de fourrure.
La première beauté «officiellement» reconnue dans notre pays était la moscovite Masha Kalinina, âgée de 16 ans. Elle se souvient : "Ils m'ont donné une Temp TV, une autre couronne, un grand vase en cristal, des fleurs y ont été versées par le haut, la trappe s'est ouverte et des fleurs, des œillets, à grosses tiges sont tombées droit dans le vase et sur ma tête. Le vase était lourd, il fallait le tenir, la couronne est tombée dans un vase, des oeillets sont tombés aussi dans ce vase... C'est-à-dire qu'il y a eu une sorte de choc complet après ce couronnement. Très lumineux, souvenirs d'une sorte d'enthousiasme, énergie sauvage, créativité - tout cela est probablement laissé à toutes les personnes de cette génération...
